The Daffodil Project - featuring Violins of Hope
Last October, the community gathered to plant 500 daffodil bulbs as part of The Daffodil Project, which aspires to build a worldwide Living Holocaust Memorial by planting 1.5 million daffodils in memory of the 1.5 million children who were murdered during the Holocaust. This spring, JCC Chicago welcomes all ages to see the NEW memorial garden in bloom, listen to a Holocaust survivor share their story and enjoy two performances in conjunction with Violins of Hope, a private collection of instruments collected since the end of World War II, many of which belonged to Jews before and during the war. Violinist Aviva Chertok will perform on one of the instruments from the collection.

Community Concerts
Violinist Aviva Chertok will play one of the 70 string instruments that belong to the Violins of Hope exhibition. Members of the JCC staff will be telling the story of the exhibits, as well as a few of the Violins.

Violins of Hope is a collection of 70 string instruments played by Jewish musicians before and during the Holocaust that have been painstakingly restored, now touring Chicagoland libraries, museums, and cultural institutions with a message of hope, resistance, resilience, and unity.

Violinists Aviva Chertok brings another concert to the Chabad of Wilmette - featuring a violin from the Violins of Hope collection, catch this performance before the exhibit leaves Chicago the following month! A piano quintet will perform seven beautiful classic Chabad niggunim, taking you on a musical odyssey through the soulful melodies of the old shtetl world.

Violinist Aviva Chertok Li presents a community concert series in partnership with the JCC Chicago and the international Violins of Hope exhibit. Collaborating with violinist Dr. William Herzog, the duo performs music of Jewish composers impacted by the Holocaust, and modern Jewish voices, to honor the past and find resilience and hope for the future.

3.23.23 Paris en Rêve - an afternoon of French Music
Paris en Rêve brings you some of the most beautiful French classical music of the 19th and 20th centuries. With a variety of works by composers like Camille Saint-Saens, Mélanie Bonis, Claude Debussy, and more, enjoy selections for solo piano, flute and violin sonatas, and three exquisite trios for this unique combination of instruments. Aviva Chertok plays violin and is joined by Kyle Dudley on flute and Daniel Szefer on piano.

Experience the beauty of classical music and the power of storytelling at this theatrical concert of Jewish music. Written and directed by violinist Aviva Chertok, "Meet Me in a Moment" opens the door to the lives of four great Jewish composers, with each musical selection followed by a scene from the composer's life. Step back in time to the living room of Ernest Bloch, join a rehearsal with Paul Ben-Haim, and attend a meeting of the Society of Jewish Folk Music in St. Petersburg with Lazare Saminsky. The program also features a special screening of an interview with modern-day GRAMMY-nominated composer, Jonathan Leshnoff.

08.09.22 Holocaust Remembrance/Worldwide Daffodil Project
The Jewish United Fund's RJD division and Holocaust Community Services present a special Holocaust remembrance event, with daffodil bulb planting in conjunction with the Worldwide Daffodil Project. Includes blessing the memorial garden, hearing from a survivor, and crafts for kids. Musical accompaniment for the event will be provided by Aviva Chertok and Liel Amdour. Come join in this meaningful and engaging moment of respect and remembrance.

"Meet Me in a Moment," is generously funded by the Genesis Philanthropy group.

Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8 in C minor was composed shortly after the German's defeated at Stalingrad. Aviva Chertok performs in the Accompanietta ensemble, conducted by Northwestern University doctoral candidate Taichi Fukumura.
